Madison Keys was stunned in the first round of the US Open by Mexico's Renata Zarazua, losing 6-7(10), 7-6(3), 7-5 on Monday afternoon.

What happened?

The No. 6-seeded Keys committed an astounding 89 unforced errors, including 14 double faults, to bow out of the tournament.
Keys, who topped the Australian Open in January to capture her first Grand Slam title, admitted to having some pre-tournament jitters leading up to the competition in Flushing.
The 30-year-old American stood as just the second American woman seeded in the top 10 to lose in Round 1 of the US Open in the past 30 years.

Why it matters for Madison Keys

The monumental loss made some history of its own, with Keys' nerves appearing to be crippling for her, making mistake after mistake.
As the only Mexican player in the singles draw, Zarazua became the first woman from her country to defeat a top 10 seed at a Grand Slam since Angelica Gavaldon took down Jana Novotna at the 1995 Australian Open.
Keys, who reached her career-high ranking of No. 5 in February, felt like her nerves got the better of her, and it kind of became a little bit paralyzing.

What comes next?

Zarazua will face Diane Parry on Wednesday in the second round, after securing the biggest victory of her career with just eight winners.
The 5-foot-3 Zarazua had lost in either the first or second round in all eight of her previous Grand Slam appearances, but she's never advanced past the second round before.
Keys, who was runner-up at the US Open in 2017, will look to regroup and come back stronger in her next tournament.
The first set ran some 72 minutes and featured nine set points, with Keys ultimately saving five set points belonging to Zarazua.
Zarazua then erased a 3-0 deficit by taking five straight games in the second set before evening the match up at one set apiece with her own tiebreak victory.
"For the first time in a while, my nerves really got the better of me, and it kind of became a little bit paralyzing," Keys said after the match.
"I felt like I was just slow, I wasn’t seeing things the way that I wanted to, which I feel like resulted in a lot of bad decisions and lazy footwork," Keys added.
With her left thigh heavily taped, Keys committed 14 double faults to Zarazua’s five, as the Mexican player secured the win.
"You always kind of feel first-round jitters, and as the day is getting closer, feeling a little bit more and more nervous," Keys said.
"But I feel like for whatever reason, today, I just couldn’t separate myself," Keys added, reflecting on her loss.
The crowd at Arthur Ashe court was electric, with Zarazua hearing some Mexican cheering, which she appreciated.
"I think it’s a country that we don’t have many tennis players, as you can see," Zarazua said during her on-court interview.
"But I had some of the Mexican tennis from doubles cheering for me, we just tried to give our best," Zarazua added.
The win was a historic one for Zarazua, and she will look to build on the momentum in her next match.
Keys, on the other hand, will look to regroup and come back stronger, after a disappointing loss in the first round of the US Open.
The American's loss was a shock to many, given her recent form and success in the sport.
But Zarazua's win was a testament to her skill and determination, and she will be one to watch in the tournament.
As for Keys, she will look to learn from her mistakes and come back stronger in her next tournament.
The US Open will continue without Keys, but the tournament is sure to be exciting, with many talented players still in the running.
Zarazua's win was a major upset, and it will be interesting to see how she performs in the rest of the tournament.
Keys' loss was a disappointment, but she will look to bounce back and continue to compete at a high level.
The tennis world will be watching to see how both players perform in their next matches.
